Ikan Asam Pedas (Sour and Spicy Fish)

Hello there!

I cooked this asam pedas for dinner tonight. Asam pedas ikan or sour and spicy fish is one of popular dish in west Malaysia. Fish or seafood cooked with the light or thick gravy which means sour and spicy. The gravy is so delicious and tasty and sometime I just eat it together with plain rice.

There are actually many different variation of asam pedas but for this recipe, I have my own version of asam pedas because I can't find all of the ingredients here. However, with the basic ingredients I have, the tasted quite good and almost like the one I had in Malaysia.

Alors, here's a simple recipe of sour and spicy fish:




IKAN ASAM PEDAS (SOUR AND SPICY FISH)

Ingredients:

2 mackerel or any fish fillets
1 tomato, cut into wedges
1 tablespoon tamarind paste, make a juice extract 1 cup
1 cup water
Cooking oil
Sugar and salt to taste

For the paste:
* Pound or blend to a fine paste
1 shallot
4 cloves garlic
2 cm ginger
1/2 teaspoon shrimp paste (belacan)
4-6 dried chillies, soaked in hot water
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder or fresh turmeric

METHOD:

- Heat up some oil and fry the fine paste until fragrant.
- Add water and tamarind juice and bring to boil.
- Once the water begin to boil, add fish and simmer for 5-8 minutes.
- Add the tomatoes, taste with sugar, salt and stir on low heat for 2-3 minutes.
- Dish out and serve hot.
